Mold Testing

Oftentimes, restoration/remediation services will perform a precautionary air quality test before beginning a restoration project for water damage to determine if unsafe levels of mold are present. If the test shows high levels, then remediation procedures are added to their action plan.

After a mold remediation service cleans out all biohazards in a building, but before occupants re-enter the premises, it is advisable to have a third-party post-remediation verification (PRV) air test conducted. Many remediation services like ECOS will perform their own test to ensure the job has been completed successfully. However, hiring someone who has no vested interest in the outcome, such as an independent licensed Industrial Hygienist, will ensure your property has a safe and healthful environment.

Third-party testing is highly advisable also because it may protect the property owner from any litigious actions that could arise later; this also protects you the property owner if questions arise later about the test results. Property owners can be held responsible for physical ailments stemming from black mold. In addition, you should check state or municipal health codes to see what restrictions (if any) might be set for air quality testing.

The PRV test (or clearance test) can show if the mold has been cleared out to at least a prescribed “safe” level. Generally, that means the test should read that mold levels inside the premises are roughly equivalent to the outside air. ECOS is certified as an independent Mold Testing Service.

Remediation

Mold is a very common and even beneficial in some cases. Some medicines, like penicillin, are derived from mold. Also, since it is one of nature’s best modes of decomposition, it is an important part of any ecosystem. However, when colonies of certain fungal species, like black mold, infest our homes and businesses, they create an unhealthful environment for humans and other animals.

There are several ways you can prevent mold from flourishing within your home or business but the primary preventative technique is moisture control. The dryer your premises, the less risk you will have of developing a mold problem.

On the other hand, controlling moisture on your property is often easier said than done, especially in the wake of a water damage event brought on by a natural flooding or broken pipes. If the excess water is not taken out of your property within a few days, your risk of an infestation by mold or some other biohazard increases. That is a major reason why it is so important you contact a restoration/remediation service like ECOS right away.

Call ECOS right away if you believe your home or office has a mold infestation. We can provide a convenient inspection and estimate. Our personnel work with insurance companies, ensuring our remediation services fall within your policy conditions. If your insurance policy contains restrictions concerning mold, we will work within those limits to drastically reduce your out of pocket expense. When your insurance company gives us the go-ahead, we follow a comprehensive set of black mold clearance procedures.

ECOS mold remediation experts have over 10 years of experience in safely removing biohazards from residential and commercial property.  Black mold damage can be brought on by water from heavy rains, flooding, broken pipes, and even fire suppression efforts.

Unfortunately, no remediation process is 100% guaranteed to properly rid your property of black mold. At the beginning of our procedure, we seek the air testing services of a Certified Industrial Hygienist (IH) to conduct a preliminary test.  Then to certify that your home or business has successfully returned to safe living conditions, this IH will provide a clearance test after our remediation is completed.

Some remediation projects do not require a clearance test, but some form of PRV should be conducted and by someone who is hired through the building owner rather than the contractor who performed the removal.

Black Mold is particularly hazardous to the health. The mold emits toxins into the air which may be easily inhaled by occupants and cause serious physical problems if the exposure is prolonged. For this reason, mold remediation is not for the average DIYer. The procedure requires training and oversight by an experienced professional.

If moisture and oxygen are present, molds can grow on virtually any organic substance (including wood, paper, or some fabrics), and it can be found almost anywhere. When called in for mold inspection and testing, we check basements, attics, and crawl spaces. With specialized equipment, such as infrared cameras, we can check for pockets of moisture inside walls and under flooring too.

ECOS Environmental & Disaster Restoration is an independent firm with a long history of successfully performing microbial assessments.

ECOS clearance testing services assure that our people or another contractor has adequately cleaned out the biohazard to within acceptable industry criteria. A properly remediated household will contain a minimum level of surface dust and mold spore associated with water damage in buildings.
